Description of the innovation

The innovation assessed is an “Energy efficient portable cold chain solution”, which is a portable
cooling box, with fast-freezing phase change materials. The box can be used to substitute
conventional cold chain refrigerated trucks by transportation with e.g. regular trucks, bikes, or cars. The innovation is provided by Tan 90 Thermal Solutions Private Limited, a company with headquarters in India.
This assessment estimates the annual avoided emissions potential of the innovation and similar
competing innovations for the year 2030, as part of Mission Innovation’s Net-Zero Compatible
Innovations Initiative aiming at identifying innovations that can significantly contribute to
decarbonisation by 2030.

Readiness levels

The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of this innovation is 7: “System prototype demonstration in operational environment”. The solution is tested across 11 states in India.

The Business Readiness Level (BRL) of this innovation is unknown: “It is not stated by the company”

The TRL and BRL were assessed using the innovators information and following the EU Horizon 2020 guidelines [2], and KTH Innovation Readiness levelTM model .

Mechanism for avoiding carbon emission

Energy efficient portable cold chain solutions avoids emissions through one main mechanism. The solution reduces emissions by cutting the demand for diesel generators globally. A refrigerated truck often keeps cool through diesel-powered generators and requires cooling of the entire cargo space, regardless of degree of filling. Therefore, in this assessment the avoided emissions are calculated from reduced diesel-powered generators. The phase change material used in the box freezes quickly and can be refrigerated in cold storages powered by e.g. solar power. This leads to reduced fossil fuel consumption to refrigerate transported goods.
